SERVICES
Psychiatric Consultation
Your treatment team will conduct a thorough psychiatric evaluation during the consultation. The consultation appointment(s) is typically 1-2 hours in length and may be split into multiple sessions, if needed. This assessment focuses on determining the best treatment plan possible and is specific to each individual patient and/or family. A comprehensive assessment is necessary regardless of the treatment modality (i.e., psychotherapy, psychiatric medications, or both) as it allows your treatment team to provide you the best possible care. In some situations, extra sessions are needed to complete an appropriate evaluation.
By the end of the consultation, your team will discuss the preliminary impressions and review treatment options. Sometimes, psychotherapy or medication management alone will suffice. Often times, however, a combination of psychotherapy and medication management is optimal.
In some situations, The Via Center, PC may not be able to meet your/your child’s mental health needs and we will refer you to another provider to receive care. Additionally, one of the most important aspects of care is a good working relationship between provider and client, so the consultation visit is also your opportunity to determine for yourself if we are right for you. If you feel that The Via Center, PC and/or your provider is not well matched to your needs, we will be happy to provide you referrals to other mental health professionals.
You/your child will not become a patient at The Via Center, PC until both you and your physician or therapist decide together that this treatment relationship is appropriate.

Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy, or talk-therapy, is a powerful treatment for many mental complaints. It offers benefits of improved interpersonal relationships, stress reduction, and a deeper insight into one’s own life, values, goals, and development. It requires a great deal of motivation, discipline and work by both parties for a therapeutic relationship to be an effective one. Patients can have varying success depending on the severity of complaints, capacity for introspection, and motivation to practice and apply what is learned outside of sessions. The process of psychotherapy can be difficult, especially at the beginning, as it can bring up strong memories and feelings such as guilt, anxiety, anger, or sadness. Sometimes these feelings can affect current relationships and might make you rethink whether therapy is for you. If this occurs, please address these issues in session with your provider as these feelings are usually temporary and working through them with your provider can be helpful in moving towards healing and growth.
The benefits of counseling can far outweigh any discomfort encountered during the process. Some of the possible benefits include better personal relationships, less maladaptive behavior, more insight, and an increase in personal choice. While we cannot guarantee these benefits, we want to work with you to help you gain your goals. Always remember that anything can be discussed in therapy. It is important to let your provider know if you feel that your goals are not being met since these issues can be addressed in session. We are always willing to refocus our approach, as feasible, or to find alternative referrals if needed.

Psychopharmacology
When appropriate, medications may be indicated depending on your/your child’s symptoms. When a mental illness markedly impacts a person’s ability to work, maintain interpersonal relationships, or properly care for their basic needs, medication may offer much needed relief. If it is agreed that medications are indicated, your team will discuss with you all of the medication options that are available. Your team will present information in language that you can understand. You will learn how the medication works, its dosage, frequency, expected benefits, possible side effects, drug interactions, and any withdrawal effects that may happen if the medication is stopped abruptly. By the end of the discussion, you will have all the information you need to make an informed decision about medication use for yourself or your child.
Not everyone is a good candidate for medication therapy. Such therapy requires strict adherence to dosage as well as frequent, close follow-up. Some medications may require regular blood tests. Your/your child’s ability to adhere to medication treatment will be taken into consideration in making the decision to start such therapy. We believe that treatment that considers your/your child’s biological status, genetics, psychological development, and social issues together will yield the best chance for success in achieving your/your child’s goals.
Therapy services should be continued while you/your child is on medication. With your consent, your team will make a strong effort to coordinate care with your therapist as well as any other relevant medical or service providers. Your team believes communication between health professionals is key to providing quality, effective care.
Medication management sessions are typically 30 minutes in length.
